Secrets and Mirrors
The Music of Ferrara and Mantua

Friday, April 8, 2016
8:00 PM Concert • 7:30 PM Pre-Concert Lecture
Mees Hall • Capital University

The courts of Mantua and Ferrara produced the last great flowering of northern Italian Renaissance music. The musica secreta (secret music) was virtuoso vocal and instrumental music performed by the concerto delle donne of Ferrara and heard only by invitation in the Duke’s private chambers. Not to be outdone, the court in nearby Mantua held similar concerts each Friday in its Hall of Mirrors, with Claudio Monteverdi at the musical helm. Also notable in Mantua was the Jewish composer and violinist Salamone Rossi, who composed polyphonic music for the synagogue. Join The Early Interval for an evening of musical gems from these two cultural centers. The concert will feature solo and ensemble vocal music with violin, recorders, violas da gamba, chitarrone and Baroque guitar.
